49ͼ¿â Community College Foundation

Founded in 1969, the 49ͼ¿â Community College Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation whose purpose is to promote the mission of 49ͼ¿â Community College in the community and seek financial support from the community. The Foundation ensures that donated funds are invested wisely and disbursed in ways that contribute to the ongoing excellence of 49ͼ¿â Community College. The SCC Foundation was the first community college foundation in North Carolina.

Since 1963, when Mrs. Mary Luman Meyer gave the gift of 250 acres of land on Airport Road in Southern Pines which created 49ͼ¿â Community College, the college has been blessed and enriched by the private support of its students, programs, facilities and capital needs.

These gifts have changed thousands of students’ lives, modernized classrooms, purchased state-of-the-art instructional equipment, created the renowned 49ͼ¿â Horticultural Gardens, and supported the high-quality cultural programs for which the college is known.  During the past four decades, 49ͼ¿â has achieved a level of excellence rare among American colleges. Much of that has only been possible through the truly remarkable level of private support the college has received over the years. Please contact Germaine Elkins, Executive Director of the SCC Foundation at (910) 695-3706 or email at elkinsg@sandhills.edu to learn more about the history of philanthropy at 49ͼ¿â Community College and how you can become a part of this very special tradition.

The 49ͼ¿â Community College Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization with Federal Tax Id Number 56-0946799.

What is the Composition of the Foundation?

The Foundation is comprised of a volunteer Board of Directors made up of representatives from the college’s board of trustees and people from the community. The work of the board is accomplished through a number of standing and special committees. Staff support for the work of the SCC Foundation is provided by the SCC Development Office.

Helping to Ensure Opportunity

A gift to 49ͼ¿â to support student Opportunity is a special commitment—a commitment made both by the donor AND the student.  The donor commits his or her financial support. The student in turn commits to do the work and take responsibility for his or her own success. This social contract between donor and student has been played out countless times over the past 45 years at 49ͼ¿â Community College—and thousands of lives have been profoundly changed as a result.

The current state of the economy has also created many challenges for 49ͼ¿â students.  Most work and many have families. Their finances are under significant strain.  But despite the challenges, the work of the 49ͼ¿â Community College Foundation goes on. The Foundation’s commitment to educational Opportunity for all who seek to improve their lives has not changed.  If a student can do the work there will be a place for that student at 49ͼ¿â, regardless of financial circumstances.  You can be a part of helping to make that special commitment a reality for a 49ͼ¿â student this year.

Helping to Ensure Excellence

There are many ways to make a gift to help ensure Excellence at 49ͼ¿â Community College. Gifts can be made at any time during the year and may be designated for a specific purpose or may be given unrestricted (which provides the college with the opportunity to use the gift where it is needed most).

The current state of the economy has also created many challenges for 49ͼ¿â.  But despite the challenges, the work of the 49ͼ¿â Community College Foundation goes on.  The Foundation’s commitment to academic Excellence for all who seek to improve their lives has not changed.

Because of budget constraints, we are not always able to purchase all of the supplies and equipment we would like to have for our programs.  Excellence funds provide support for faculty, facilities, teaching supplies and instructional equipment—those priorities which make a quality education possible.  You can help ensure that the programs 49ͼ¿â offers to students will be the finest educational experience the college can provide.
