Ìýof Scaffold features a conversation with the architectÌýGonçalo André Pires.
Gonçalo André Pires (PT) is an architect, who studied architecture at Faculdade de Arquitectura de Lisboa and Accademia di Architettura di Mendrisio where he graduated with professor Quintus Miller. Gonçalo collaborated in offices around Switzerland, Belgium and Spain, such as Atelier Peter Zumthor, OFFICE Kersten Geers David van Severin, Vincent van Duysen Architects and Estar. In 2021, he has co-founded Studio Sotnas, focusing on developing and realising buildings, exhibitions and publications. He currently lives and practices in between Portugal, Switzerland and Denmark and teaches at Aarhus School of 51ÇàÂ¥.
Sotnas’s work balances the highly technical with the atmospheric. Their buildings appear both strangely familiar and almost alien,Ìýharkening back to the high tech movement of the 1970’s, while also projecting forward to cusp of a new reality of light weight, high performance construction that uses standard components in new and surprising ways. Gonçalo came to London in early November of 2024 to share his work with students at the RCA, after which he sat down to record this interview.Ìý
"While in the 90s and 2000s there were a lot of idealistic inventions and visions that wanted to be forced into being, now it’s more about reassembling and reorganising existing meanings and values in the things that we might we already have at hand, understanding that it’s more about discovering than inventing. We’re interested in bringing meaning to a building from the components that are essential to it." – GAP
